| Post subject: | Masterful Mize leads in Naples |
Larry Mize certainly topped his cake with cherries on Friday, an eagle at 17 and a birdie at 18 rocketing him into the first-round lead at the over-50s ACE Group Classic. His strong finish with Cleveland CG16 Tour Black Pearl 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shaftshelped Mize produce a stunning 10-under 62 in what he called near perfect weather at the Twin Eagles Golf Club in Naples, Florida, to take a two-shot lead over Champions Tour 'youngster' Kenny Perry, the Tour's 2011 Player of the Year Tom Lehman and seasoned Russ Cochran, the 2011 Senior British Open champion. Unheralded Mike Goodes, who only made it into this weekend's event as a qualifier, is a stroke further back in lone 5th place with Germany's back-from-injury Bernhard Langer and Americans Michael Allen and Jay Haas sharing sixth place with 66s. "I just think it was an ideal day to playCleveland CG16 Tour Black Pearl 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts," declared the 53-year-old Mize who 25 years ago chipped in to win the 1987 Masters championship. "I've just got to enjoy with Cleveland CG16 Tour Black Pearl 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts today and come out and keep firing the next two days because everybody's going to be firing as well," Mize said. Perry, meanwhile, thought it "amazing" that he could shoot a 64 and still find himself two behind. "It's a typical day on the Champions Tour," he mused. Only three of Mize's eight birdies were created by putts inside 10 feet. He holed a 25-footer on the 7th and a monster 45-footer on the 11th "It doesn't surprise me when Larry Mize makes a putt," said Goodes, who played alongside the first-round leader by Cleveland CG16 Tour Black Pearl 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts. "If you ever watch that silky stroke of his, you'll see it as one of the prettiest ever." "I could see 6, maybe 7 under, but 10 under is pretty amazing," said defending champion Bernhard Langer, who may well have been aware that Mize's 62 is the lowest on Tour since Nick Price shot an 11-under 60 last year in the Toshiba Classic. It was also a career low for Mize who last shot a 62 in the 1985 Los Angeles Open so it was not too surprising when he said: "Sixty-twos don't come along very often, so it's a pretty special day for me." Perry was 8 under going into the 17th, which had been playing downwind and yielded six eagles and 36 birdies, but he put his tee shot in a bush and had to take a drop from an unplayable lie, came up short of the green and then put his pitch shot 20 feet past the hole and dropped a shot "I may have tried to swing too hard with Cleveland CG16 Tour Black Pearl 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts on No. 17; may have tried to do something shouldn't have," Perry said. "But I was feeling good. I had made nine birdies, and just was rolling after four birdies in a row." Lehman also had a good birdie run, rallying after bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes to pick up shots on each of the next five holes and just missing making a sixth birdie at the last. Cochran, playing the back nine first, birdied his final two holes, the 8th and 9th, to get to his 8-under. |
