New Titleist 712 AP1 and AP2 Irons
New AP irons from Titleist - AP1 and AP2 sets - are coming in November under the 712 Series monicker. The Titleist 712 Series irons are due to hit retail on Nov. 18, 2011, with the AP1 set's MSRP at $112 per club with steel shafts and $135 per club club with graphite shafts; and the AP2 set's MSRP at $154/$175 (steel/graphite) per club.
Titleist's first AP irons debuted in 2007, and the latest iteration includes a "712" stamp on the hosel, as visible in the image above. The "AP" stands for "advanced performance" and represents the effort of Titleist designers to engineer irons that combine both workability and forgiveness without deviating too far from the look of traditional irons.
To that end, the
Titleist AP1 712 Irons and AP2 irons both incorporate high-density tungsten internal weighting to help boost MOI but without changing the center-of-gravity location (keeping CG the same distance from the shaft axis) or blade length.
Both sets, Titleist says, have been "significantly upgraded" for additional forgiveness and higher ball speeds. The 712 Series AP1 irons are aimed at the "aspiring to skilled golfer" and offer more forgiveness relative to the AP2; the 712 AP2 irons are targeted at highly skilled golfers and are forged.
The Titleist AP1 712 irons have beveled toplines and a traditional shape; the AP2 irons have a squarer profile. The 712 AP1 long irons have a 4-percent increase in MOI compared to the previous AP1 set, and progressively shorter blade lengths in the short irons.
The Titleist AP2 712 irons are 7-percent higher in MOI compared to the previous AP2s, and have a small amount of progressive offset but with a constant blade length. The new AP2s also have thinner sole widths in the 8, 9 and PW. Both of the Titleist 712 irons have an elastomer-and-aluminum insert on the rear of the clubhead, in the cavity, designed to improve the sound and feel at impact.
The stock shaft for the 712 AP1 is True Temper Dynamix Gold XP in steel and Graphite Design Tour AD in graphite. For the 712 AP2, the stock shaft is the True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft.
