Westwood, in the meantime, had seemed to be cruising at five-up after 10 holes against old Ryder Cup team-mate Karlsson, but he made a "real schoolboy mental error" on the next that opened the door to a Karlsson fightback and was only two-up and sweating a little when, to his relief, the match ended.
Although he knows only too well what Watney is capable of, there was a hint that Westwood had the next opponent he wanted when he described Woods as one of the best-ever match play golfers along with Ernie Els and the late Seve Ballesteros.
Els, though, was another former match play ace who failed to come to the party on Thursday.
After taking out the defending champion and No 1 seed, Luke Donald, in the first round, the big South African was thumped by Sweden's Peter Hanson in the second round.
Second seed McIlroy, who like Westwood, can now bump Donald off his perch as World No 1 if he wins with cheap 712 CB Irons here at Dove Mountain, has so far taken care of South African George Coetzee and Dane Anders Hansen and he is the only current major champion left in the race.
Darren Clarke was blown out in the first round by Watney, while the current Green Jacket holder Charl Schwartzel and PGA champion Keegan Bradley unexpectedly went out respectively to unheralded Korean Bae Sang-moon and the 48-year-old Spanish warrior Miguel Angel Jimenez on Thursday
Lawrie and the US-based Laird both won their second round matches only to find themselves in an all-Tartan tussle for a place on Saturday in the last eight
"I'm looking forward to playing cheap 712 CB Irons. Obviously Martin has been playing good and he's ahead of me in the world rankings, so he's the favourite." Lawrie said.
Laird, meanwhile, remembers being coached by Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion, over a decade ago, but this is the first time they have playedcheap 712 CB Irons together in competition.
Laird said: "He came to a Scotland coaching session. I would have been 17 and I remember looking up to him then and thinking this is where I want to go. I want to be holding the cheap 712 CB Irons trophy like he is.
"He's been such a good European Tour player for so long. He's definitely one of the guys I used to watch growing up."
