TaylorMade RocketBallZ RBZ Fairway Woods Review
Here is the new TaylorMade RocketBallz line. This is the RBZ Fairway Woods. I have to admit I still thought the name RocketBallz was a joke even before I was given the presentation yesterday.
Once you get past the name, the first thing you'll notice about the TaylorMade RocketBallz RBZ fairway woods is a cavity carved in the sole. Positioned just behind the face, it is designed to increase the flexibility of both the face and the sole of the club to help increase ball speed.
According to TaylorMade, the engineers who developed the club—and a small number of Tour pros who were given a chance to hit the earliest prototypes—all said that the 3-wood "hit the ball like a rocket." That is about the average distance increase they are seeing and what they can legally claim. Sean Toulon calls it the "Most incredible machine ever created".
So how did they make the fairway wood so much hotter? They found a way to push the limits of COR (coefficient of restitution) to the limit. Something that has never been done before in steel fairway woods. Here's what TMAG did:
- Deeper face, for a larger trampoline.
- improved sole geometry and a “Speed Pocket” to improve overall head and face flexibility
- CG moved forward and below the center axis. Previous fairway woods have the CG too low and back with a majority of golfers hit too low off the far, producing low launching and high spinning shots. Promotes a higher launch angle and lower spin-rate, better distance
"We have never seen a fairway wood that has gone right up to the USGA speed limit," Olsavsky says. "We had some things made from titanium that got close, but no one wanted to pay for them, so we're excited to be able to produce a product in a steel construction that goes right up to the USGA limits for coefficient of restitution [COR] and CT [the face's trampoline effect]."
The TaylorMade RBZ fairway woods will be available in both standard and Tour models. The Tour version has a slightly smaller head, a more open face angle and a fade bias. Similarly, TaylorMade will offer a standard RBZ Rescue club and a Tour Rescue.
I personally saw distance increases. RocketBallz is the real deal and you could hear players yelling "RocketBallz!".
