The Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce on Monday issued a warning to the public about bogus business chambers established to "milk" cash out of them.
"We urge local businesses to check the credentials of organisations purporting to be chambers ... before being taken in by such misrepresentation," said the chamber's chief executive Keith Brebnor.
"We would like the public to know that these 'chambers' are actually businesses being run by individuals for their own profit.
"True chambers are registered as not-for-profit section 21 associations, run for the benefit of their members and not their staff or officials," Brebnor said in a statement.
He said businesses should call Pat Corbin, a director of the International Chamber of Commerce South Africa on 011 726-5300, to check the credentials of those chambers.
