Computer no longer needed to make calls over the internet
MAKING a call should be as easy as picking up the phone and dialing a number. Until recently this has been the big problem with internet telephony because most of these services require a computer.
But South African consumers will get a taste of computerless voice calls through the internet using a new service that lets them use a normal telephone handset.
Broadband Talk, an offering from MWEB, uses a broadband internet line — known as an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) — to transmit the call like any other digital information and make it as easy as using a normal phone.
“The main benefit of Voip (voice over internet protocol) is cheaper international and cellphone calls using a data network. With Broadband Talk, users will be able to make international and cellphone calls at a fraction of the current land-line price,â€
