Posted: 2005-05-01 / Author: Ken Gosnell What To Do When Life Gets BlurryLife can get a little blurry at times. What happens? Well, consider the following. We Bury ourselves with pointless activities. We wake up and go to work and do the exact activity that we did the day before, because we did it the day before. We Lose sight of our personal and professional goals. We lose sight of our own goals and surrender to the goals and wishes of those around us. It is interesting that not very many people would get in a car and drive any distance without first consulting a map, and yet most business professionals do not let the goals of their life determine their direction. We let non-essential issues Usurp our power. One of the greatest attributes we bring to our workplace is our creative energy. To lose focus is to sap one’s energy. We all know how it feels when we’ve lost our energy. Maintaining our focus maintains our energy and our access to our own power. We Replace the significant with the urgent. It is easy to focus on the tasks that need to be immediately addressed and never ask if the tasks need to be done at all. Goethe reminds us that “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least”. We Resist our need for balance. Not too long ago I had an empty experience. I was on my way to an important meeting and noticed that my gas tank was nearly empty. I tried to call the office but my cell phone’s battery was empty. At the gas station I went to write a check and my checkbook had no checks and was empty and my bank account was nearly empty as well. That day I decided to make a change. I decided that I would not live on empty any longer. That day I decided that balance was as important as accomplishment. We Yield our passion to the passion of others. Steven Covey says, “It’s easy to say ‘No!’ when there’s a deeper ‘Yes’, burning inside.” However, I have found that there are four steps that help to clean up the blur and enable us to refocus ourselves when life becomes a little blurry. Find moments for what I call “Long Drinks of Silence.” These are moments where you are able to get away from the voices of the day and listen to your inner voice. It is truly astonishing the power that we receive when we listen to what our spirit and soul is calling us to do or not to do. Unfortunately, most of us never hear that inner voice because we are too busy listening to voices around us. Don’t be afraid of silence; rather, embrace it and you will find your direction. Make a good choice about your life and your future. I always tell my clients that “our destiny unfolds in the future, but it is shaped by the decisions that we make today.” The point that I want to drive home is that each of us are able to make choices for our life. When we take responsibility for ourselves and move ourselves to action, the unattainable becomes attainable. We all have within us the power to make a good choice that will make our life better right at this moment. So one important step to seeing clearly again is to make a good choice for our life and our future. Find a paper and note the goals that you want to accomplish for that month. There is something releasing about taking a few minutes and writing down your goals. Goals are motivating. They help to move us from where we are to where we would like to be. A great philosopher once said, “What we can dream of becoming, we already are.” Goals that are written are already half done. Lastly, pick a cause and devote yourself to it wholly. Pick one action item that you want to accomplish and give it all the energy and focus that you can muster. One of my favorite old proverbs says, “The man that tries to catch two rabbits, catches none.” The point is to focus on the one item that you want the most. In January 2001, a group of scientists at the University of Houston announced a breakthrough in eyesight. They introduced an eye implant that may cure some forms of blindness. Their ’bionic eye’ is designed to mimic a real retina with light-detecting cells. A healthy eye has millions of such cells, but age-related diseases can destroy them, resulting in 1.7 million cases of blindness each year in the U.S. This is a fantastic breakthrough in the world of science. However, there is a more important breakthrough for you today. Today, you can make a choice to regain your vision. You see in reality there are many more than 1.7 million cases of blindness in the U.S. Most of us are blind where it comes to life. If we are not blind, we are at least a little blurry. Today you can have a defining moment in your life if you will say “no” to those aspects of your life that cause you to lose your vision and cause life to become blurry. ------------------- Ken Gosnell in the CEO of KenSalt Coaching in the DC Metro area.
